For my self-directed project, I wanted to create a 2d composite work that went all-in on the scrapbooking concept I'd been experimenting with. Through extensive use of masking and texture overlays, I was able to create a portrait in the style of a traditional scrapbook in a digital medium. When confronted by the idea of creating a self portrait in the past, I have found it extremely challenging to depict myself. Perhaps this is due to my self-confidence issues, or my mild face-blindness, but whatever the reason, I set myself the challenge to create a self-portrait. For me, the concept of a collage hinges around the recontextualisation of existing images, almost like a new start. Once again, I used a limited colour palette of pastel hues in order to balance out the multitude of patterns used in the work. I utalised the gaussian blur tool to create drop shadows for each individual piece of "paper," further creating a scrapbook effect. While the gentle, harmonious colours and simple stylisation create a cute, even childlike effect, I drew the figure staring into the viewer with the aim of creating a pang of disquietude amongst the bright, nostalgic athmosphere of the work, a subtle signifier of my neurodivergence.
After collating the images I wanted to use, I painted an additional holographic texture that I would use to create a sticker effect. I utalised gaussian blur and the multiply layer mode to create drop shadows under each piece of paper, along with masking a paper grain texture to each of the segments.
